Although the Glendon Association’s outreach is both national and international, Glendon devotes considerable effort and energy to offering resources to the local Santa Barbara County community. These services are often donated free of charge.
 

TRAINING AND OUTREACH:

Glendon is often called upon when suicide or violence strikes the Santa Barbara community. The Glendon staff offer assistance and consultation to mental health agencies, schools, first responders and other providers to deal with those impacted by these critical incidents.  Further community support is provided through collaborative outreach, information sharing and referrals.

SANTA BARBARA RESPONSE NETWORK: 

Glendon is an integral partner in the Santa Barbara Response Network (SBRN) formed in 2010 in the aftermath of a Latino youth suicide cluster. Glendon donates considerable staff time to maintaining their operations.
 

RESTRICTION OF MEANS FOR SUICIDE:

The Glendon Association was also the consulting expert for CalTrans and the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Department in the construction of the Cold Springs Bridge barrier completed on March 1, 2012.  Learn more about Restriction of Means.
 

PUBLIC EDUCATION:

Glendon produces and distributes free prevention brochures (in English and Spanish).

Glendon has produced four educational films on suicide and violence, which are made available to professionals and the general public in Santa Barbara County.   Glendon also offers Webinars on mental health topics including suicide, violence, PTSD, depression, and parenting.

Additionally, Glendon created a website, PsychAlive.org, which provides valuable psychological information for everyday life.  It offers content in the areas of parenting, relationships and self knowledge.  PsychAlive also provides suicide prevention advice and offers helpful resources including: warning signs, risk factors, helper tasks and strategies for suicide prevention.
 

SUICIDE AND VIOLENCE PREVENTION FORUMS:

For 15 years Glendon held annual suicide and violence prevention forums in Santa Barbara and Santa Maria.  The forums were offered as free community events. They were a collaborative event that brought together mental health professionals, educators, and concerned community members to increase awareness of the issues of suicide and violence and address the stigmas and services available to deal with these public health concerns. MEDIA TRAINING ON RESPONSIBLE REPORTING OF SUICIDE:

Glendon has been training local community media on how to report on suicide to minimize harm and possible contagion.  The media guidelines can be viewed here.
